The CVFPP is California’s strategic blueprint to improve flood risk management in the Central Valley. For the 2022 Plan Update, GEI modeled future hydrology for multiple climate scenarios, and investigated the vulnerability of major Central Valley reservoirs to projected flood runoff volumes. The analysis focused on how changing precipitation, snow accumulation and snow melt would impact runoff and reservoir operations. The team investigated how changing reservoir operations, such as increases in regulated releases and higher flood peaks, would compare to downstream channel capacities, in order to improve flood system planning.
